The Taste of Coffee

The Taste of Coffee is an experience of life lived with coffee in the farm as witnessed by three artists who set out to capture the richness of home-grown coffee beans on their canvas, microphone and camera respectively. Three artists, Clara Puddu, Eloïse Calatayud and Gaurav Dhwaj Khadka, with diverse skills and passion in their respective fields of art have highlighted the uniqueness of this rich and aromatic crop through their paintings, sound design and photography through this exhibition.

However, The Taste of Coffee isn't just about coffee, it is about the people involved in the sowing and reaping of the crop. The exhibition tries to draw attention to the lives of people involved in coffee farming though the chores of Surya Prasad Adhikari and his wife Saraswoti Adhikari, who run a permaculture coffee farm in Lekhnath -10, Begnas of Kaski district, Nepal. The exhibition also highlights the couple's perception and contribution to conservation and improvements of local varieties of cultivation, organic farming and sustainable uses of local biological resources.

The Taste of Coffee is up in painting, sound and photography exhibition at Nepal Art Council Gallery, Babarmahal, Kathmandu 19th through 27th February 2011. The exhibition will be inaugurated by veteran photographer Mr. Hari Bangsha Kirant.

The exhibition has been organised by NEPALPHOTOGRAPHY.org with support from Galleria CUC and Momomagic.

Photo Kavya 2011 - Call for Entries

Photo Kavya is an annual competitive photo exhibition organized by Nepalphotography.org to promote young and upcoming photographers. With a sole aim to bring the unseen and unknown photographers to a week-long “gala photo exhibition” this is the second year Nepalphotography.org has set out to look for young and talented photographers.

The basic requisite of entering Photo Kavya is good visual storytelling. “Kavya” means poetry, or prose – so what we’re looking for is photos that contain a story. However, out of all the entrants, we select only 10 final photographers who will exhibit their works in the Photo Kavya exhibition. After undergoing couple of rounds of interviews and selection, we pick the final 10 photographers and their 50 photographs that will grace the walls of Photo Kavya.

Eligibity Rules and Criteria:

Photo Kavya is free to enter by anybody possessing good photographs. However, after the selection, each exhibiting photographer will have to pay a non-refundable NRs. 6999/- as participation fee. Review meeting is free of charge.
The photographers will be selected on the basis of the quality of work. Although we’re targeting fresh newcomers, any interested photographer is eligible to participate.
By submitting their photographs to Photo Kavya, the photographer agrees to grant the permission to exhibit, archive and use the photograph in promotional materials or press articles.
The photographers will be called for a second round of meeting based upon the samples of the photographs submitted by the participant. Each participant should explain about themselves and their work in about 500 words and should attest not less than 10 photographs along with their submission email, which should be send to nepalphotography.org@gmail.com.
Once reviewed, the photographers and organisers will undergo another round of selection of photo and the exhibits will be finalized.
The final selected photographs will be put up on display in a reputed art gallery, accompanied by opening and closing ceremony.
Entry deadline is 15 February 2011.
All decisions made by Nepalphotography.org are final, and all disputes shall be addressed by the organisners, Nepalphotography.org.

This month, we are pleased to invite you to a presentation by Canada based photographer Surendra Lawoti.

Surendra Lawoti was born in 1972 in Panchthar, Nepal. He is currently based in Toronto, Ontario, where he teaches Photography as an Adjunct Faculty at Ontario College of Art and Design. He received his BA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago (1999) and MFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design (2005) in Boston. He has received grants from Artadia, Somerville Arts Council, Community Arts Assistance Program Grant through City of Chicago and Ontario Arts Council. His work has been exhibited widely in Chicago and Boston in the US, in Toronto, in Medellin, Colombia and in Kathmandu, Nepal.

Surendra is interested in the dynamics of social class, race, gender, religion and sexuality and how that affects individuals and social groups in a given historical time frame. For his current work Don River, he has been photographing the landscape of Lower Don River Valley in Toronto, its residents and its recreational users. The work deals with the inglorious history of Lower Don, homelessness, socioeconomic disparities and effects on urbanization on the river.

Along with Don River, Surendra will show work that depicts the Nepali Diaspora that he made while he was in the United States. He will also share his personal experiences of studying, teaching and working in the field of photography.

Today’s Youth Asia (TYA)’s student in April 2009 attended as intense photographic workshop led by Danish photographer Stephen Freiheit and project coordinator Thomas Kurek.

Students worked with 8 topics within portrait and documentary photography: My City, My Dream, My Mother, My Neighborhood, New Democracy, New Generation, Religions and Women’s conditions in Nepal.

In September 2009 the exhibition was inaugurated at the Cultural House Kvarterhuset in Copenhagen, Denmark by Nepali Ambassador to Denmark, HE Vijay Kant Lal Karna. The Danish media welcomed the exhibition by publishing pictures and writing warmly about the artistic works of the young Nepali student of TYA.

The project is supported by The Danish Centre for Culture and Development (DCCD).

The exhibition “New Nepal?” is going on at Nepal Art Council, Babar Mahal, Kathmandu, Nepal.

From 27 February to 14 March 2010, the gallery TECHNE 'Contemporary Art presents' BASOBAS' of Birman Shrestha edited by Angela Pellicano.
The exhibition offers a glimpse through 27 shots of an anthropological and social Nepal seen from the objective of an unknown 'Nepali' (Man of Nepal).

The path Birman Shrestha has chosen is outside the tourist circuit and nothing and none of the persons proposed by him can be considered folklore as there is no representation or complacency of a people living a diachronic dimension.
The photographs come from a survey of Burmese territorial and the combination of time and of its authenticity.

There is construction but not randomness. Just wait, as we define the Nepali photographer, his career lasted five years.
His first exhibition in Europe, is only stop on his route in the West, will continue its project to deepen America where the techniques of photography.
Techno Contemporary Art with 'Basobas' continues the trilogy dedicated to photography began with 'Paradoxalvision' Margaret Crocco, an artist who works between Paris and New York and ending with a photo exhibition ever on the trip.
At the vernissage, which takes place February 27 pv at 17.00, will feature the artist.

Scott has lived and worked in Asia for more than 20 years, in East Africa for nine years, in the Caribbean for three years and in Egypt for three years. His serious interest in photography developed as a means to interact with the diverse people and cultures he encountered in his work. In many ways this interaction, and the possibility of capturing through photography the hope and beauty he encountered, was a counterbalance to the grim realities he grappled with in his relief and development work. After a ten year absence Scott recently returned to Nepal to focus his energies on photographing the wonders of life in the Kathmandu Valley.

For nine months, Fulbright Scholar Liz Lance has been submerged in a study of mass media affecting beauty, body image and femininity in young women in Nepal. She sought to understand the ways that mass media consumption has affected Nepal’s changing standards of beauty. Informed by years of academic research, many hours of interviews and relationships built with young women who shared their lives, Liz captured their ideas about beauty and body image in the photographs presented in this exhibition.

Three young women are highlighted in this exhibition: one from rural Eastern Nepal who struggled to survive alone in Kathmandu, with shifting body image and confidence levels; a young singer who ramps up her sex appeal for the benefit of a music career, though remaining a traditional Nepali girl at heart; and a record-setting professional mountain biker with a body that brought her success in a male-dominated field, hides her muscles to maintain her femininity. The explosion of beauty contests and beauty parlors across Nepal are captured, which suggests how women perceive empowerment through beautification and the associated quandary of exploitation.

This exhibition tells a poignant story of changing mores amongst young women in Nepal, without judgment, and with compassion.

About the Artist:
Liz Lance holds a bachelor’s degree in South Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and has completed post-baccalaureate coursework in Nepali language, literature and culture at Tribhuvan University’s Bhishwa Bhasha campus in Nepal. Liz has also completed graduate work in documentary photography at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine, and was a participant at the Missouri Photo Workshop in 2007. She was awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to undertake this photographic project. Liz begins her master’s studies in journalism at the University of Missouri in 2009.

Multimedia presentation by Liz Lance

Liz spent the last eight months making photographs and recording audio with young women in Nepal, asking them about their views on beauty, body image and femininity. The seven multimedia presentations are a combination of still photographs and recorded audio, using the young women's voices to tell their own stories. She will also speak briefly about the process of making multimedia, as well as the process of documentary storytelling.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Liz Lance, a current resident of Kathmandu, received a Fulbright Fellowship to document the effects of mass media on beauty, body image and femininity in young women in Nepal. Liz has lived in Kathmandu on and off since 1998, when she was a student on the University of Wisconsin’s College Year in Nepal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Language and Cultures of Asia from the University of Wisconsin, studied Nepali culture, language and literature at Tribhuvan University’s Bishwa Bhasha Campus, and begins her Master’s degree in journalism and the University of Missouri in August 2009.

Open Mondays to Saturdays, 12noon to 8pm. Closed on Sundays & Public Holidays. Admission is Free.

Only a mere 28 per cent of girls in Nepal are literate, and less than three out of ten can read. Without essential skills, these girls risk falling victim to prostitution rings and child trafficking networks. Others are forced to live on the streets.

Education is the best hope these girls have of a normal life. A life of independence and true freedom.

For more than a decade, The Little Sisters Fund has been giving Nepalese girls a glimmer of hope through scholarships for underprivileged girls in Nepal. Photographers Debby Ng and Edwin Koo entered the homes of our little sisters - Nepal's hope for a better future. These photographs tell their story.

Prof. Dr. Johan Swinnen (born 1954) is an art and new media critic, editor and writer who teaches modern and contemporary art history at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and at University College Artesis Antwerp (Belgium). He is also guest professor on a regular base at the Université de la Sorbonne Nouvelle - Paris III (France). He has written extensively for numerous catalogs and magazines on the central role of historical theory in contemporary art and information and communication media, and did also curatorial projects. About Neil:
Neil Eschenfelder is an American raised in New York who began his photography experience in college. Instantly hooked, Neil began working in the retail end of the photo business while working at numerous photographic venues including running a photo studio, working with the Salt Lake Public Defenders Association producing courtroom art for trail and working with several advertising agencies. Stretching from more traditional landscape, portrait and commercial photography, Neil brought his talents to bear becoming a SCUBA instructor as well as an underwater photography instructor, leading numerous adventures to the Caribbean and Pacific, compiling thousands of slides.

Enjoying instruction, Neil teaches at the University of Utah's Lifelong Learning Department, developing a basic photo class then branching into digital by creating the first digital photo class which continues as a top draw to this day.

Neil recently landed at Pixels Foto and Frame in Sandy, running the company education department as well as building the company's very successful photo safari program, including trips to Africa and expeditions to seek polar bears in Alaska.

Frédéric Lecloux, a traveller, a writer and a photographer, was born in 1972 in Brussels and lives in Drôme, southern France. His pictures are distributed by Vu' Agency in Paris and is represented by Gallery Emotion-Lydie Trigano, in Paris. His work is deeply influenced by his first travel in the Himalayas at the age of 20 and by the reading of Nicolas Bouvier masterpiece, The Way of the World. In 2005 he followed Bouvier road to the Khyber Pass to write his own homage to the Swiss writer, in text and images. His long-term work on contemporary Nepal is one of the only auteur- and humanist photographic analysis of the society of this country and its mutations. We wanted to change things up a bit so this month we have a film we would like to share with you.

"Nine Days in the Kingdom" is a documentary film about 55 of the world's great photographers.

How does a photographer capture that decisive moment, find the best light and interact with his or her subjects?

To provide a unique behind-the-scenes look at the world's top photographers at work, Editions Didier Millet has teamed up with two production houses to create multiple documentaries about the 9 Days adventure.

Hopping planes, trains and boats, film crews from Bangkok-based MCOT and Paris-based NGM Production were on-hand throughout Shoot Week to capture the action. Audiences will travel with the photographers to remote locations throughout Thailand, gaining insight into both the craft of photography and the diverse culture of this modern Kingdom.

Thailand: 9 Days in the Kingdom showcases the work of 55 of the worlds leading international photographers including several from Thailand. These photographers represent an international group of talents with a range of specialties; photojournalism, wildlife, underwater, aerial, landscape, portraits, architecture and more. Taken over a period of 9 days, the images captured by these world-class photographers stand as testimony to an exciting and evolving period in Thai history.

4th Annual Nature and Wildlife Amateur Photography Competition

Nature and Wildlife Photography has been a major part of YEP, for we believe photography can be a powerful advocacy tool for nature conservation. Photography reaches out to people of all ages and from all walks of life. Through this program YEP is trying to provide a platform for nature photographers to do justice to our natural heritage by capturing through pictures through their lenses so that its beauty or plight can reach out to people and bring them together to protect and conserve biodiversity. WCN has been organizing photography workshops in schools and colleges and for its in-house volunteers and this program has been particularly popular amongst the youth.

This program used to be conducted by ECAP and UWP, but due to its immense popularity and its huge forte YEP has decided it make it an independent entity itself and most of its activities are conducted through the YEP Photography Club. This year WCN has made a decision to accept up to four photographs from interested participants. This year WCN is conducting this Amateurs Nature and Wildlife Photography competition for the fourth year.

A Smile Portfolio of Nepalese Leaders

Presently, our country is going through many changes. Though most of us are not sure about the results, we are all hopeful for the best. We hope that the “New Nepal” everyone dreams about would come true in the coming days.

We have always seen the political leaders give heated speeches, protest in the streets and show their cunning sides. Very little have we seen them in their lighter moments. In this exhibition, Gallery 32 @ Dent Inn has collected those rare moments from the lenses of Pushpa K.C., where our leaders are seen smiling and sharing their lighter moments of life.

Pushpa has been exposed to many faces of the politicians in his photojournalism career. His interest diverted him to capture these light moments within the heated political moments.

We wish that after the election, the leaders would be seen smiling more than protesting on the streets. We also hope that the Nepalese people will be able to smile like their leaders in these pictures. We wish for a “Smiling State”!

About Artist:
Pushpa K C, Photographer
Pushpa KC who loves to take pictures of nature, started his photographic career from 1995 after completing his basic photography training. He Is involved with various national weeklies as a photojournalist since then. He is presently working with “Jana Aastha National Weekly”, a French magazine called “En…Vies” and other photographic projects.

His photographic journey includes work with Save the Children (SC)-UK (presently known as SC-Norway) as a Consultant-Photographer. His assignment with SC was to photo-document ongoing activities of SC-UK projects implemented in different parts of the country. Story collections and photographs taken by him was published in different publications of SC and was also exhibited in the national level advocacy event – The Journey of SoVAA projects titled “Our Voice-Our Emotion” in Kathmandu. His photographs can also be viewed in branches of Standard Chartered Bank.

His recent exhibition was held in Strasbourg, France titled “Scenes of Nepal”. He has also exhibited his photographs in various other exhibitions in past years.

Nripa Dhoj Khadka
Nripa Dhoj Khadka, a senior instructor of Electronics and Computer Engineering at Pulchowk Campus has been leaching computers and electronics every weekdays for the last 25 years but during weekends and free time, he leads a different life- a life of a passionate nature photographer. It has now been over 30 years that he has been capturing images of wild flowers, insects and birds. Not very interested in fame, Mr. Khadka kept his work hidden from the world all this time; however talent and dedication as strong as his can never hidden for long. His work appeared in the public for the first time in January 2005 when he took part in a photography competition organized Wildlife Conservation Nepal (WCN) for amateurs. he participated in the competition because it was a charitable event for nature conservation and he came out as a winner and from that point forward he has not been able to crawl back to his shell from people who have begun to appreciate his work. And he today is called the bestókept secret in the field of photography of Nepal. A collection of his photographs of insect appeared in June issue of ECS Magazine. His photographic seminar organized by WCN in May 2005 for students to appreciate the ecology of Godawari was a huge success. He is currently advisor of the nature photographers club at WCN.

Photo Exhibition: Hidden Japan

The Embassy of Japan in association with Japanese Universities Alumni Association, Nepal (JUAAN) and Japanese Language Teachers' Association, Nepal (JALTAN) has organized a photo exhibition: 'Hidden Japan' from March 7 to March 19, 2008 at the Embassy Hall. Ambassador Mr. Tatsuo Mizuno, Mr. Prachanda Man Shrestha, Chief Executive Officer of Nepal Tourism Board, Mr. Bal Bahadur Parajuli, President of JUAAN and Mr. Nurbu Lama, President of JALTAN jointly inaugurated the exhibition on March 5, 2008. The exhibition is supported by the Japan Foundation.

The photographs on display are from Mr. KijuroYahagi's collection. These photographs are outcome of his picture-taking journey throughout Japan extending over some 20,000 kilometers, exploring the very deepest layers of Japan. Some photos present animistic scenes involving natural features and objectives as mountains, rocks, stones and trees. The others present scenes such as rock gardens, fields surrounded by mountains, fisherman's house surrounding a small harbor, a large city full of hurrying pedestrians, traffic jam, etc. Each picture exhibited brings to the surface glimpses of various aspects of Japan. In other words, his collections reflect Japan as it. Mr. Yahagi who has won numerous prestigious awards both in Japan and abroad is an internationally recognized photographer.

First photograph of a first day of a new year…

I hope this year I will do some more experiment with photographs and learn more things that I like. This year, I hope I will be able to play with 120mm camera and also with LOMOgraphy and as usual with some new digital camera also. I also love to take more photographs with “Through the Viewfinder [TtV]” photography and “CMYK” photography.

Mission I am working is on: to put 100000 photographs online, to do 10 group photo exhibition and 1 solo photo exhibition.

In 2008, I will try to uplift my mission.

Enchanting Life with Light by Rocky Prajapati

‘Enchanting life with light’ - a photo exhibition opened at the new Bakery Café outlet in Pulchowk on 26 November 2007. The show featured photographs by Rocky Prajapati, an upcoming photographer.

The exhibition reflects his passion for black and white photographs and also his take on life. He started assisting photographer Kishor Kayastha in 2002 and traveled with him on a learning journey. Prajapati now takes on his own assignments at Photo Club, a professional studio located in Putalisadak. Opening its walls to photography and other visual art forms, the new Bakery Café outlet in Pulchowk looks forward to hosting a variety of engaging visual shows in the future. ‘Enchanting Life with Light’ will be showcased until 10 January 2008.

Contest regulations

1. This contest is open to everybody; photo-lovers and professionals.
2. Submission dead-line: 30th November 2007.
3. You may submit photographs in any format (print or digital).
4. No digital manipulation is permitted.
5. You may submit only 1 photograph per person, directly at the Alliance Française in Kathmandu. *Please fill in a submission form.
6. The submitted photographs will not be returned to the artist.
7. A selection of 15 photographs will be exhibited from December 10th-31st 2007 at the Alliance Française in Kathmandu.
8. The winning photograph amongst these 15 will be used to illustratethe 2008 New Year postcard of the Alliance Française in Kathmandu.
9. The winner will be announced on December 14th 2007, chosen by a jury composed of photo-lovers, students and professionals.
10. Winner will receive special prizes and the winning picture will be published in the January issue of WAVE magazine.

This month at photo.circle we have:

A selection of photographs from Beldangi I, one of the seven Bhutanese Refugee camps in Jhapa and Morang. all photographs were taken by camp residents and are an unadulterated representation of daily camp life from the eyes of insiders. we will have representatives of Third World Media- one of the organizers of the photojournalism workshop that resulted in these photographs.

we also have Eviction, a short film by Grady Walker that talks about Lhotshampa refugees in legal limbo
