KATHMANDU INTERNATIONAL MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL
7-11 December, 2006
KIMFF - Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival is being organized in Kathmandu from 7-11 December 2006. Over Seventy films – documentaries, features, animation, shorts – from 26 countries will be screened back to back at three venues across Kathmandu - at the Russian Cultural Centre, Kamal Pokhari; Gurukul, Purano Baneshwore and the Tourist Service Centre at Exhibition Road.
Audiences can enjoy the best films on mountains, mountain people and mountain sports from around the globe. The films cover a wide array of subjects – including conflict, culture, climbing, wildlife, environment, globalization, gender, and lifestyles.
The fourth edition of Kimff is a tribute to Dr. Harka Gurung, eminent author and geographer and hardy supporter of the festival since its inception in 2000. Two books – Atlas of Nepal and a collection of his Nepali writings will also be released at a special tribute session during the festival.
Kimff’ 06 will present a Retrospective of films by the late Narain Singh Thapa, an Indian filmmaker of Nepali origin who specialized in films on Himalayan Valleys and mountains. Chief Producer of Films Division India from 1980 – 1983 and a Padma Shree Awardee, Thapa’s works include the coverage of the first Indian Expedition on Mount Everest in 1968.
Kimff ’06 will also showcase “Best of Banff”, a selection of films from Canada’s premier mountain film festival.
In ‘Know Your Himal’ Quizmaster Kunda Dixit will test audiences on their knowledge of the Nepali Himalaya.
Kimff '06 in collaboration with WWF Nepal has organized a Photo Competition/Exhibition on Nepal's highlands. The best fifty entries will be exhibited at the Russian Cultural Centre.
An Audience Award will be given to the film that receives the most votes from the audience.
