FAIR & LOVELY - Beauty lies in Nepal
Multimedia presentation by Liz Lance

Liz spent the last eight months making photographs and recording audio with young women in Nepal, asking them about their views on beauty, body image and femininity. The seven multimedia presentations are a combination of still photographs and recorded audio, using the young women's voices to tell their own stories. She will also speak briefly about the process of making multimedia, as well as the process of documentary storytelling.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Liz Lance, a current resident of Kathmandu, received a Fulbright Fellowship to document the effects of mass media on beauty, body image and femininity in young women in Nepal. Liz has lived in Kathmandu on and off since 1998, when she was a student on the University of Wisconsin’s College Year in Nepal. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Language and Cultures of Asia from the University of Wisconsin, studied Nepali culture, language and literature at Tribhuvan University’s Bishwa Bhasha Campus, and begins her Master’s degree in journalism and the University of Missouri in August 2009.

Open Mondays to Saturdays, 12noon to 8pm. Closed on Sundays & Public Holidays. Admission is Free.

Only a mere 28 per cent of girls in Nepal are literate, and less than three out of ten can read. Without essential skills, these girls risk falling victim to prostitution rings and child trafficking networks. Others are forced to live on the streets.

Education is the best hope these girls have of a normal life. A life of independence and true freedom.

For more than a decade, The Little Sisters Fund has been giving Nepalese girls a glimmer of hope through scholarships for underprivileged girls in Nepal. Photographers Debby Ng and Edwin Koo entered the homes of our little sisters - Nepal's hope for a better future. These photographs tell their story.
